You need an active X.500 account to download and install the VPN client.
You need an active Computer Science and Engineering (CS&E), College of Science and Engineering (CSE) Labs, or X.500 (in ece-vpn AD group) account to be able to connect to the vpn server.
The Cisco AnyConnect client software is available from the Cisco AnyConnect download page.
Windows
Install the AnyConnect VPN client
- You need to be logged in as administrator to your computer.
- Go to the folder where you downloaded the Anyconnect vpn client software and unzip the (.zip) file. In order to unzip the .zip file, right click on the file and select "Extract All".

Once you have downloaded and extracted the files:
- Go to the folder that contains the extracted files, it should be named something like anyconnect-win-2.5.3054-k9.
- There should be a folder named binaries, go to this folder.
- Double click on the file called anyconnect-win-2.5.3054-web-deploy-k9, this will bring up the Cicso AnyConnect VPN Client Setup, follow the steps provided.
- After you have finished installing that file, double click on the file called anyconnect-gina-win-2.5.3054-web-deploy-k9. This will bring up the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client Start Before Login Components Setup, follow the steps provided.
- Once you have successfully installed both of these files you may need to restart your computer.
- The Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client should now be located under the start menu.

Now follow the instructions to run the software.
Run the AnyConnect VPN client
All users:
- Start->All Programs->Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.
*A new window called Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client will appear.
- In the "connect to" box, enter eecs-vpn.cs.umn.edu.
CS should use their CS UNIX username and password
- In the "Group:" selection box, choose ComputerScience.
- In the "Username:" box, type your CS UNIX username.
- In the "Password:" box, type your CS UNIX password.
CSE Labs should use their CSE Labs username and password.
- In the "Group:" selection box, choose CSE Labs.
- In the "Username:" box, type your CSE Labs UNIX username.
- In the "Password:" box, type your CSE Labs UNIX password.
EE should use their X.500 username and password (AD EE-VPN users only).
- In the "Group:" selection box, choose Electrical_Engineering.
- In the "Username:" box, type your X.500 username.
- In the "Password:" box, type your X.500 password.
Vista Users
Vista is pre-configured to use an LM session security level that is not compatible with our Samba shares, e.g. your Y: drive. When attempting to mount a Samba share remotely, you may get the following error: "The referenced account is currently locked out and may not be logged on to."
If you experience this problem, you may need to use regedit to modify the the following registry key:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LmCompatibilityLevel
and set the REG_DWORD value to 1.

Install the Cisco AnyConnect client
- Go to the folder where you downloaded the client software and double-click the file. It will mount a virtual disk image on your desktop called CiscoAnyConnectClient.
- Go into this new disk that was just created. Double-click on the file called 'Cisco Anyconnect Client.mpkg'. This will start the installer.
- Run the installer, clicking 'continue' where required.
Run the AnyConnect client
All users:
- Double click the AnyConnect client application.
- In the "Connect to:" box, enter eecs-vpn.cs.umn.edu.
CS should use their CS UNIX username and password.
- In the "Username:" box, enter your CS UNIX username.
- In the "Password:" box, enter your CS UNIX password.
EE should use their X.500 username and password.
- In the "Username:" box, enter your X.500 username.
- In the "Password:" box, enter your X.500 password.
CSE Labs should use their CSE Labs username and password.
- In the "Username:" box, enter your CSE Labs UNIX username.
- In the "Password:" box, enter your CSE Labs UNIX password.
Ubuntu Linux

These instructions have been tested and are supported with Ubuntu 10.04.
Install the Cisco AnyConnect client
- Open a GNOME terminal by hitting Ctrl-Alt-T.

Download the 'Linux AnyConnect' or 'Linux 64 AnyConnect' client from the link above based on whether you run a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Linux. If you're not sure, run 'uname -m' in the terminal. 'x86_64' indicates a 64-bit OS (select Linux 64 AnyConnect from the download page) and 'i686' indicates a 32-bit OS (select Linux AnyConnect from the download page).

In the terminal, cd to the downloaded client. It's probably in ~/Downloads:
cd ~/Downloads

Tar and gunzip the file:
tar xfz anyconnect-Linux_64-2.5.3054-k9.tar.gz
It may have a different filename. You can run:
tar xfz anyconnect
and then hit the Tab key to complete the file name.

cd ciscovpn

sudo ./vpn_install.sh
- Follow the prompts and enter your password if necessary. Hit y and press enter if you accept the license agreement. The VPN client will install.
Run the AnyConnect client
- Click on Applications -> Internet -> Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.

In the Connect to: box enter:
eecs-vpn.cs.umn.edu
and press enter.
- Press the down arrow next to Group and select your account type.
- Login with your UNIX username and password.
- Press Accept on the pop-up window.
To disconnect from the VPN, right-click on the new VPN icon in the upper-right and select Disconnect or Quit.
