If you have any questions or are having any problems, please email operator [at] cs.umn.edu .

Important Things to Note

  • This will work on the grad machines and also on a personal laptop connected to the cs network. However, if you are running Windows XP on your personal laptop, you will need to be sure your username on your laptop is the same as your CS&E account username, otherwise you will encounter authentication problems when you try to print.
  • If the computer you are using is not part of the CS&E domain, you may be prompted to enter a username and password. If this occurs, be sure to use "CS\<username>" and your CS&E windows password. The "CS\" must be prepended to your CS&E username, otherwise you will not be able to authenticate.
  • Printing from Cowbell.cs does not work in the standard way. You must redirect the output back to the host when initiating rdesktop:
    rdesktop -r printer:<printer_name> cowbell

Troubleshooting

If you are still having trouble connecting to a printer after following these steps.

  1. Log out and log back in.
  2. Check to make sure that the printer is still added to your profile.
    • If not, run through either method again then come back here.
    • If it is, try connecting to it by double-clicking the printer and selecting "See what's printing". If you can see the queue, you should be able to print. If not, remove the printer and try re-adding it by following either method again.

If you have used troubleshooting step 2 and you still cannot print:

  1. Check your printed pages quota: double-click the icon on your desktop.
  2. If all else fails, email or call the operator
    • operator [at] cs.umn.edu
    • Red Phone (if in the labs)
    • 612-625-0876

Let the operator know that you have gone through these steps, and the lab, printer and computer that you are using
